Dynamic Simulation Studies.

At the conceptual design (or FEED) phase, dynamic simulation studies are especially valuable in evaluating process configurations, examining equipment line-up (especially compression systems), studying control strategies, and identifying the process operating envelope.

At the detailed design (or EPC) phase, dynamic simulation is employed to assess equipment design constraints, to verify operating procedures (start-up / shutdown / turndown), to validate safety and shutdown systems, to establish control system settings, to examine equipment failure scenarios, thereby minimising any commissioning difficulties. The cost benefits from early identification and elimination of errors can be substantial, leading to reduced start-up times and reduced risk.

After start-up, dynamic simulation models can be deployed to assist with plant trouble-shooting. Problems tend to be complex and are usually multiple in nature (simpler problems get solved by operational support staff). Areas where benefits can be gained include plant debottlenecking studies, control system incompatibilities or unwanted interactions, process instabilities, equipment malfunction, wear or fouling, process or control modification validation (prior to implementation on the plant).

With our extensive experience of plant operations and process design / modelling, we can assist in all the above areas including:

  • Compressor complex control system design and configuration (for anti-surge and loadsharing controls) for both new and existing processes.
  • Design, development, validation, use and┬ádelivery of┬ábespoke dynamic models for customer use, i.e. we can assist your technical staff to develop accurate, fast and robust process models
  • Alternatively you can provide the process data and we can perform the modelling and analysis to your requirements / specification, delivering both the process model and a study report.
  • Conversion of existing customer models (written in an older programming language that cannot be maintained) into custom block creation (dynamic extensibility) in one of the more modern simulation packages (that will allow your company to take full advantage of the existing investment)
  • Training in simulation and modelling techniques
  • Development of modelling guides / internal work procedures / best practice guides / simulation tools to make simulation projects more consistent and efficient

Operator Training Simulators (OTS)

Virtual Plant Simulators are detailed high fidelity real-time simulators which are custom built to match the dynamic behaviour of single or multiple plant units and their associated control systems. These powerful systems are used for a variety of purposes including:

  • operator training (training new operators, for operator certification, event management, and for team training)
  • knowledge management (to improve operations - quicker start-ups / shutdowns / less operator errors)
  • optimization of production capacity and quality
  • testing control strategies prior to implementation
  • improved controller tuning
  • DCS / IPF system checkout (prior to plant start-up on Greenfield sites)
  • implementation / testing of APC strategies (prior to initial start-up)
